Understanding the landscapes, gardens and buildings

The brief to introduce a new building at Hampton Court Palace for the first time in more than 150 years presented a rare opportunity to explore the history and sense of place at this highly significant historic site and to work with a contemporary inflection of historic materials.

Understanding the many expressions of architecture in both garden and palace structures was vital to the design development.

By knitting the proposed new building into the site visually and materially ensured both continuity and modernity within the same intervention.

The Clore Learning Centre is a single storey reception building and the project included refurbishment of the 17th century Barrack Block to provide education facilities for visitors to the Palace.

My work was focused on understanding the landscapes, gardens and buildings across the whole site in order to inform the material and form for the new building.

Hampton Court Palace is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and development of this scheme required continuous and careful dialogue with Heritage England.
